Biography

Prof. Dr. Christoph Kumpan, LL.M. (Univ. of Chicago), Attorney at law (New York) holds the Chair of Civil Law, Corporate Law and Capital Markets Law at Bucerius Law School since April 2020. The chair is sponsored by the Dr. Harald Hack Foundation. His research focuses on corporation and capital markets law, fiduciary law, market organization law, including economic analysis of law and a comparative approach with an emphasis on the U.S. and England.
 

Education

Student intern with the Dresdner Bank AG (1996-1998). Intermediate diploma in economics, Humboldt University Berlin (1998). First State Examination in Law, Heidelberg (2000). LL.M., The University of Chicago Law School (2002). Second State Examination in Law, Hamburg (2004). Doctorate on the regulation of alterative trading systems (2005). Admitted to the New York State Bar as Attorney at Law (2005). Visiting Fellow at the University of Cambridge (Spring 2006 and Fall 2008). Habilitation on the law governing conflicts of interest (2013).
 

Experience

Research Associate (2000 - 2004) and Senior Research Fellow (2004-2012) at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg. Member of the working group of the Commission of Exchange Experts under the Federal Ministry of Finance (2004-2005). Advisory Counsel to the Federal Ministry of Finance regarding capital market infromation liability (Spring 2005). EU Short-Term-Expert for the harmonisation of takeover law in Turkey (2006-2007). Member of the editorial board of the Rabel Journal of Comparative and International Private Law (since 2009). Recording clerk of the business and corporate law division of the Deutsche Juristentag (2012). Member of the working group “Finanzmarktgesetzgebung beim Bundesministerium der Finanzen“ (since 2012). Substitute professor at the Westfaelische Wilhelms-Universitaet Muenster (2013). Guest professor at the Humboldt-Universitaet Berlin (2013-2016); Chair for Private Law, Company and Business Law, Comparative Law and Conflicts of Laws and Director of the Institute for Economic Law (2018 – 2020 managing director) at the Martin-Luther-Universitaet Halle-Wittenberg (2016-2020).
