Biography
Thomas Rönnau, born 1962 in Verden/Aller, holds the Chair of Criminal Law, Business Criminal Law and Criminal Procedural Law. He studied law from 1982 to 1987 at the Christian Albrechts University of Kiel and the University of Surrey in Guildford, UK. Subsequently he served as research fellow at the Christian-Albrechts University, Kiel, receiving his doctorate in 1990 (thesis: "German Criminal Procedure and Plea Bargaining"). He completed his practical legal training, including a stage in San Francisco, with the Second State Examination in 1992.
Following a period as jurist with a major North German company, he returned to the university as research fellow, receiving his post-doctorate from the University of Kiel in 1999 for a study on the general part of the Penal Code ("Lack of Consent in Criminal Law"). Prof. Rönnau has taught at the universities of Hamburg, Rostock and Kiel. His principal areas of research at the Bucerius Law School are Criminal Law Theory, Criminal Business and Environmental Law, as well as Criminal Procedural Law, particularly plea bargaining.
