DLA Piper becomes Partner of Bucerius Law School

World’s largest law firm is supporting expansion in the fields of Intellectual Property, Information Technology & Media Law

The international law firm DLA Piper is to become a new sponsor of Bucerius Law School and is entering at the highest support category of "Partner". With 4,200 lawyers at 76 locations in 30 countries, DLA Piper is the world's largest law firm.

Support from DLA Piper will enable the private university in Hamburg to expand its activities in the fields of Intellectual Property, Information Technology & Media Law. This includes the IP Lecture Series, which has been attracting internationally renowned academics and practitioners to Hamburg since 2009, as well as discussion events in the USA, which were jointly organized by the American Friends of Bucerius and DLA Piper in New York City, Los Angeles and Silicon Valley last year. An international, academic conference on current topics in Intellectual Property Law is planned for 2012, which is also intended to provide stimuli for further development phases.

Bucerius Law School, Germany's first endowed, private university for jurisprudence is largely funded by its founder, ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius, via tuition fees and financial contributions from supporters. Donations come from sources including large law firms, banks and industrial enterprises and currently account for some 11 per cent of the budget.

Dr. Hariolf Wenzler, CEO of Bucerius Law School: "In its Intellectual Property & Technology practice group, DLA Piper has acknowledged expertise in this dynamic field of law. We are delighted by the synergies that will result from our future collaboration."

Dr. Jan Geert Meents, a partner at DLA Piper and head of the Intellectual Property & Technology practice group had this to say: "Bucerius Law School is among the leading Germany universities in the field of jurisprudence. We are pleased that cooperation with DLA Piper will give Bucerius Law School and its students the opportunity to extend the curriculum in the future-oriented legal fields of IP and IT."
