Education & Study |

Where did you work before coming to Bucerius Law School?

I worked at the corporate law firm Oppenhoff for two years before starting the MLB programme at Bucerius Law School. I still hold my position as a business lawyer in the firm's corporate team and now work part-time while studying at Bucerius.

Why did you decide to study in at the Bucerius Law School?

It was both the excellent reputation of Bucerius Law School and the MLB program that made me decide to study here. It turned out to be the best decision because from the first days on campus I felt very welcome and quickly became part of the Bucerius network. Furthermore, Hamburg is a vibrant city that offers many career opportunities after the program.

What makes the MLB program special in your opinion?

What makes the MLB program so special is its professors and teachers as well as the very good administration and organisation of the courses. We all feel very cared for in our problems and needs. The diversity of the class is also a key factor and really is one of its greatest assets. The mix of business classes and law classes broadens the overall understanding of real world challenges in a great way and is therefore truly unique.

What are the biggest differences between Germany and the Netherlands?

Before joining the firm, I did an LL.M. in Maastricht, the Netherlands. Both universities are very progressive in their teaching methods and really care about their students. What stands out at Bucerius is the fact that you can choose to do the LL.M. or the more business-oriented MLB, which is the more interesting choice for most students.

What’s an experience at this university, that is completely new to you?

A completely new experience for me is how everything is centred around us students. Yes, the courses are challenging, but we get all the support we need to do our best. In addition, as students at Bucerius, we have many opportunities to meet with interesting leaders in the business world, which helps us to build our own network while we are still studying.

Currently you work in a law firm. What are your future career plans?

I plan to either continue my career in the law firm or move to an in-house legal department in a company or group of companies. The internship in the program will certainly help me to decide on my next professional steps.

ALL PORTRAITS

From which experiences in the MLB program do you benefit the most?

The MLB Support Team is one of a kind. If there is a question about the course structure, electives, career paths, applications or anything else, the Support Team will take care of it. Also, the very international class makes me consider many different perspectives and shows the importance of different cultural and educational backgrounds.

What do you like most about Hamburg?

Hamburg has a lot to offer. I love running around the Alster, having a drink in Sternschanze or strolling through the city centre. On colder days you can visit interesting museums or spend time in one of the many small cafés. In the summer, it's great to hang out in the central park or take a nice Sunday walk along the Elbe. I like that there are so many great things to do here.

Bennet, thanks for the interview!
