MLB student Jonathan at Law Without Walls in Segovia, Spain

Jonathan Guertler attended the LWOW Sprint to find innovative solutions to pressing issues at the intersection of law+business+technology

From 25 – 27 March 2022, Jonathan Guertler, a German Master of Law and Business student at Bucerius Law School took part in the three day LWOW Sprint event hosted by IE University in Segovia.  Over the course of 3 intense and challenging days, talented, multidisciplinary teams made up of a mix of intergenerational legal and business professionals, academics, and law/business school students from around the world worked together to solve real business-of-law problems and social responsibility challenges.

The Sprint 2022 followed the innovative 3-4-5 method (3 Phases-48 Hacking Hours-5 Stages) and included collaboration exercises, intensive hacking as well as a mini-composium. Jonathan talked to us about his experience.

Why did you chose to participate?

I think it’s a great chance to experience what the MLB program is all about; studying and working at the intersection of law and business.

What´s the first thing that comes to your mind when thinking about the LWOW experience?

The first thing that comes to mind is "blood, sweat and tears". It was a rewarding but personally challenging experience.

How intensive was the preparation for the pitches?

The whole three days in Segovia were pretty intense. After 12-14 hours of work every day, we went out for dinner and drinks with our team members, so there was no real break. But despite the long hours this helped us a lot to grow as a team, to believe in ourselves and to prepare for the big conposium presentation on the last day.

What inspired you most on this tournament?

Two things that inspired me the most about this tournament were my team members and the IE campus in Segovia, which is located in an old monastery in the heart of Segovia. My team members had different professional and cultural backgrounds and the auditorium where the whole LWOW tournament took place is housed in an old church with very high, vaulted ceilings.

Will you stay in touch with your team members?

Yes, I’ll try my best. However, they come from all around the globe, so let’s see how this works out.
