Meet: Kate – Student of the 2022 MLB program

Katsiaryna Hashko, from Belarus, starts her MLB. She told us about being an associate before and about her reasons for studying at Bucerius Law School.

Hi Kate, from which country did you come to Bucerius Law School?

I am from Belarus.

What was your experience coming to Hamburg for the first time?

I liked the city a lot! First time, on my way to Bucerius Law School I went through Planten un Blomen and caught myself admiring an amazing park right in the heart of Hamburg. Afterwards, I discovered HafenCity and now that’s the place where I love spending my time walking around or sitting on a bench while watching ships being loaded and unloaded, especially during sunsets.

You obtained an LLB and an LLM from Belarusian State University, why?

Both degrees mostly cover international law. My decision to study law was inspired by the idea that I can learn “the rules” by which people live and business operate and by the possibility to contribute to these rules being improved.

How do you think moot courts coaching experience will help you at Bucerius Law School?

I was coaching teams for three moot courts: the first one was on international commercial mediation, the second one on WTO law and the third one on arbitration. I learnt how not to do the work for the team but rather navigate them towards the solution. Another lesson was about how to gain and keep credibility despite being a young coach. At Bucerius Law School I am back as a team player, especially in the group tasks, and I enjoy it a lot.

What was your job in Belarus before moving to Hamburg?

I was an associate in the Belarusian office of an international business law firm.

Why did you decide to get an MLB?

In my opinion, MLB is a unique degree that provides its holder with an interdisciplinary equipped instrumentarium. As a lawyer, I believe that the MLB degree will give me a better business perspective on clients’ issues and will make my legal advice more client-oriented and efficient.

What made you specifically choose Bucerius Law School to pursue an MLB?

Bucerius Law School has an impressive reputation, not only in Germany, but also abroad. In addition, I was tempted by the "lifecycle approach" of the curriculum which I think makes the program unparalleled.

Kate, thanks for the interview.
